Encounter/ Rencontre: Guillaume Corbeil, Playwright

In 2008, Guillaume Corbeil published a collection of short stories entitled L’art de la fugue (éditions L’Instant Même) that was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and recipient of the prix Adrienne-Choquette. In 2009, he published his first novel, Pleurer comme dans les films published by Leméac then in 2010 for Libre Expression, he wrote Brassard, a biography of the famous Director André Brassard. In 2011, he completed his training in playwriting at the National Theatre School of Canada. Since then, he has written for the stage Le Mécanicien, Tu iras la chercher, Unité modèle – which will be presented in 2016 Centre du théâtre d’aujourd’hui. Nous voir nous produced in 2013 by Pap theatre under the title Cinq visages pour Camille Brunelle and presented at Espace Go in Montréal, at the Théâtre de la Manufacture in Avignon and at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The play has been awarded le prix de la critique for Outstanding New Text, le prix Michel-Tremblay and the audience award at the Primeurs Festival in Saarbrücken, Germany. In September 2014, it was produced in German, at the Theater der Jungen Welt, Leipzig.

Playwright and novelist, Lise Vaillancourt has written fifteen plays. She was noticed for “Marie-Antoine, opus 1”, “Billy Strauss” and “Journal d'une obsédée”. Her second novel, “L'Été des eiders” and her work for children, “La Balade de Fannie et Carcassonne” and “Le Petit Dragon” earned her GG Award nominations. She wrote two pieces for acrobatic theatre, “lili” and “Moi moi moi”that toured in Europe, Asia & the USA. “Le case L'Affaire Dumouchon” was presented at La Licorne and “Une histoire pour Édouard” in colaboration with le Théâtre des confettis and Les Exilés de la lumière and Espace libre. She was writer in residence at the Banff Centre, the Festival International des Francophonies in Limousin and La Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. She was a leading figure with Théâtre Expérimental des Femmes (TEF), a founder of Espace Go and Artisti Director of Théâtre de la Ville Longueuil for 9 years. In the 2000s, she has served as an expert to the Commission Internationale du Théâtre francophone (CITF). She is currently President of the Centre des auteurs dramatiques.

Maureen Labonté is a dramaturge, translator, and teacher. She has also coordinated a number of play development programs in theatres and playwrights’ centres across the country. In 2006, she was named head of program for the Banff Playwrights Colony at the Banff Centre. She was dramaturge at the Colony from 2003–2005. She was also Literary Manager in charge of play development at the Shaw Festival from 2002–2004. Previous to that, she worked at the National Theatre School of Canada, first developing and running a pilot directing program and then coordinating the playwrighting programme and playwrights’ residency. She still teaches at NTS.

Mauren has translated more than thirty Quebec plays into English. Recent translations include: The Bookshop by Marie-Josée Bastien, Everybody’s WELLES pour tous by Patrice Dubois and Martin Labreque, and The Tailor’s Will by Michel Ouellette. She will soon be starting work on: Wigwam by Jean-Frédéric Messier and Bienvenue à (une ville dont vous êtes le touriste) by Olivier Choinière.

Multi award-winning Ruby Slippers Theatre has had a fantastic 2014/15 season that includes the critically acclaimed productions of The Duchess a.k.a. Wallis Simpson, After Me (Après Moi) and The List. Other recent hits: Communion, A Beautiful View and Hotel Bethlehem. RST produces, creates and presents provocative text-based theatre from the vanguard of the English and French Canadian canon. Our work illuminates diverse perspectives and social issues, inspiring independent critical thought and communion.

Ruby Slippers Theatre’s legacy includes 3 national tours and 8 full-length original works. Over the last 10 years alone they have garnered 31 Jessie Richardson Theatre Award nominations including twice for Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Production, and 12 Awards. Diane Brown is the Artistic Director.

Larry Tremblay is a writer, director, actor and kathakali specialist. He is the author of over twenty books and is one of Quebec’s most produced and most translated playwrights. His work is noted for the diversity of genres it explores.

In 2001 his play The Ventriloquist had three separate productions, in Paris, Brussels and Montreal. The Montreal production, under the direction of Claude Poissant, garnered six “Gala des Masques” nominations, including Best New Play, and won the Masque for Best Production. The Ventriloquist, already translated into eight languages, has had recent productions in Turino, Mexico, Toronto, Ottawa, Bucarest and London (U.K.). Thanks to an uninterrupted succession of new plays (Anatomy Lesson, Ogre, The Dragonfly of Chicoutimi, The Genie of Drolet Street, Blue Hands, Soap, Bagpipes, Panda Panda…) Tremblay’s work continues to achieve international recognition. A Chair in love created with composer John Metcalf was the fourth of his works presented on stage in Montreal in 2006, following Three Seconds when the Seine Stopped Flowing, The Story of a Heart, and The Axe which he also directed. In 2007 he shared the stage with Carl Béchard performing in two of his shorter plays The Decline of Destiny and The Trouble with Me.

His novel The Bicycle Eater, published by Leméac, was unanimously saluted by the critics, won the Prix Roman 2003 at the Salon du Livres in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award. In 2006 he was awarded the Canada Council Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton Prize for his contribution to the theatre. Gallimard Paris published Piercing, a collection of three of his short stories. In 2008, Abraham Lincoln Goes to the Theatre premiered at Espace Go in Montreal, directed by Claude Poissant (Théâtre Pàp), and was nominated for Best Production 2007-2008 (Montreal) by the Quebec Critics Association.

Larry Tremblay was finalist in 2008 and in 2011 for the Siminovitch Prize. In 2010, Alberta Theatre Project produced at Calgary Abraham Lincoln Goes the Theatre, translated by Chantal Bilodeau, under the direction of Bob White. The same year, his play The Dragonfly of Chicoutimi was directed by Claude Poissant at the Festival TransAmériques (FTA), in Montreal. In 2012, SACD (Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques), in partnership with France Culture, awarded his play, War Cantata, the Prix SADC for best world play written in French and CEAD (Centre des auteurs dramatiques) awarded it the Le Prix Michel- Tremblay for the best play written in Quebec in 2012. Still in 2012, his play Child Object was staged in Quebec City by Christian Lapointe. Apart from his plays, Larry Tremblay published recently two novels highly acclaimed, The Obese Christ and The Orange Grove.

Until 2009, Larry Tremblay was teaching acting and dramatic writing at l’École supérieure de théâtre de l’Université du Québec à Montréal.

Rébecca Déraspe, Playwright
Rébecca Déraspe is a graduate of the École Nationale de Théâtre. Her graduate project Plus (+) que toi was presented at the Monument National directed by Martin Faucher. She was a member of the Nous sommes faits (comme des rats) collective produced by Les Biches Pensives and directed by Alexia Bürger. Her young audience work Le Radeau was presented at the Théâtre de la Petite Marée. IT’LL NEVER LAST (DEUX ANS DE VOTRE VIE) was produced by Les Biches Pensives room at Théâtre d’aujourd ‘ hui. Her theatrical adaptation of Les Merveilleux voyage de Nils Holgersson à travers la Suède by Selma Lagerlöff was presented at Théâtre de la Petite Marée.

Chantal Bilodeau, Translator
Chantal Bilodeau is a New York-based playwright and translator originally from Montreal, Canada. Her play Sila recently won the Woodward International Playwriting Prize, First Prize in the Earth Matters on Stage Ecodrama Festival and the Uprising National Playwriting Competition. She is the recipient of a Jerome Travel & Study Grant and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Her translations include plays by playwrights Julien Mabiala Bissila (Congo), Sébastien David (Quebec), Mohamed Kacimi (Algeria), Koffi Kwahulé (Côte d’Ivoire), Étienne Lepage(Quebec) and Larry Tremblay (Quebec).

Leanna Brodie, Translator
Leanna Brodie is an actor, writer, and translator whose work includes For Home and Country as well as CBC radio plays and opera libretti. She has translated plays such as Catherine Léger’s Opium_37 and Louise Bombardier’s My Mother Dog, Philippe Soldevila’s Tales of the Moon, Sébastien Harrisson’s From Alaska, and the Dora and Victor award-winning Baobab. She was nominated for a 2013 Jessie Award for her performance in Pi Theatre’s Terminus.

Diane Brown, Director/ Dramaturg
Diane is the Artistic Director of Ruby Slippers Theatre and a multi award-winning director, actor, and. Diane has commissioned many English language translations of the best in contemporary French Canadian plays and produced and directed their award-winning English language premieres in Vancouver.

Heidi Taylor, Director/ Dramaturg
Heidi Taylor is the Artistic and Executive Director of PTC and Vancouver-based dramaturg, director and performance maker and. She has worked with writers from across the country in the annual PTC Writers Colony. Heidi co-created and produced a variety of cross-disciplinary projects with Proximity Arts from 2003-2011, including Susan Elliott and Tanya Marquardt’s sited dance piece, Mal de mer, an Recent projects include: Sea of Sand, Transmission, and Cloudless (José Teodoro/BC Buds). Heidi holds an MFA from Simon Fraser University, where she taught intro acting for eleven years.

France Perras, Actor/ Producer
A graduate from the University of Ottawa theatre department, France is an accomplished bilingual actress who produces, and has directed. She works in theatre, television/film, voice-overs, and hosting/moderating. She is the co-founder and Co-creative Producer of BoucheWHACKED! Theatre Collective. She has acted at Théâtre la Seizième on a variety of national tours including Jessie nominee for Outstanding Production “Lentement la beauté”. She received a Jessie Richardson Award for Best Ensemble Performance for “Clon@ge.PA“, and for Best Supporting Actress for “Porc-épic”.

Gilles Poulin‐Denis, Playwright/ Actor
Gilles Poulin‐Denis is a graduate of l’Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2010 he was nominated for ‘Outstanding performance by an actor in a lead role’ at Vancouver’s Jessie awards for his role in Le Périmètre. His first full‐length play Rearview was produced in Saskatoon in 2009, receiving ‘Outstanding achievement in new playwriting’ award, and has since toured the country. The play was also nominated in 2010 for the Governor General’s literary arts award. Gilles is currently working on two new plays, one with the National Arts Centre’s Théâtre Français and the other for Vancouver’s Théâtre la Seizième.
