LA COALITION DE LA ROBE

By Marie-Claude Garneau, Marie-Ève Milot & Marie-Claude St-Laurent
Translated to Italian by Carolina Migli
Featuring Elisa Ferrari, Sara Gurnari & Melania Mililli | Production dramaturgy by River Coello

When: Sunday, May 8, 2022
Time: 9 PM
Where: Teatro Trieste 34
(Via Trieste 34 – 29122 Piacenza, Italy)

“This work is necessary so Italian artists understand that the same problems are faced all over the world, even in a country as focused on human rights as Canada.” – Mirella Girometti, public

“I didn’t know that there were so many barriers to women in in theatre” – Elisabetta Molinari, public

“…the revival of Quebec’s feminist theatre, a vibrant homage to art, the place of women to challenge everything…” – Le Devoir

They appeared from the shadows, like from a horror movie, the invisible armed with all their crumpled and scraped ideas. In their hands were their stillborn dreams & characters.

Marie-Claude Garneau, Marie-Eve Milot and Marie-Claude St-Laurent investigate a story of invisibility and anonymity. This interdisciplinary document records the writers’ political awakening, and their discovery of a heritage not taught in school – the works of Quebecois women. They share their personal journeys, their theatre knowledge, their liberating anger in a collection of scenes, essays and manifestos. A new generation of writers, performers, and audiences is here to shake off their chains and take their rightful place.

To promote Canadian work over the pandemic, I reached out our international peers. With supported from CEAD, PTC and PWM, I supplied contemporary Canadian works in both official languages fitting each international company’s mandate to chose from; introduced like-minded artists and organisations; and supported funding applications and English language documents.

Translation for theatre falls in the professional category “Creative Translation”. By it’s nature Theatre is a collaborative effort, and translation for theatre is no different. A close cross cultural exchange between playwright and translator is crucial – providing understanding of the playwright’s motivations, choices, and the cultural understandings unique to the playwright’s culture, identity, etc.

SILENZIO

By Tina Davies
Translated to Italian by Carolina Migli
Translated from Silence: Mabel and Alexander Graham Bell

When: Saturday, April 23, 2022
Time: 9 PM
Where: LA SERRA del PALAZZO GHIZZONI NASALLI
(Vicolo Serafini, 12 – 29121 Piacenza, Italy)

“The workshop presentation gave life to a deeply poetic reflection on our way of communicating and on the place of human beings in the world, thanks to the skillful translation work of Carolina Migli… Between beautiful vintage costumes and soulful music , the exciting and delicate reading staged at Palazzo Ghizzoni Nasalli is only the beginning of the story of how Mabel and Alec supported and challenged each other in the service of the good. Of a feeling that overcomes physical barriers and class prejudices…A concrete hope that accessibility and inclusion can become a priority focus also for Italian theater.”
– Micaela Ghisoni, www.piacenzasera.it

It only takes one spark of love to change the world forever. Mabel Hubbard Bell was a strong, self-assured woman—bright, passionate, and a complete original. Despite a near-fatal case of childhood scarlet fever that cost her the ability to hear, she learned to talk and lip-read in multiple languages. At nineteen, she married a young inventor named Alexander Graham Bell and became the most significant influence in his life. Mabel’s unique perspective on her remarkable life, and beautiful and true love story about how we communicate.

About Active Access Design

Active Access Design was born from my work with Global Hive Labs., an international network of artists and companies, co-founded with Denise Yvette Serna (USA), Katie Merrit (UK) and Carolina Migli (EU), working together in devised creation. With collective members across multiple countries, we identified access as a priority.

The 2019/20 Global Hive Labs. international collaborations Medusa USA (Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, Pop Magic Productions) and Medusa UK (London’s The Pleasance Theatre, The Cockpit Theatre, & Fusion Theatre), we focused on incorporating Audio Description and Touch Tours into Dramatic Narrative.

Spring 2020, we teamed up with Teatro Trieste 34 (Piacenza, Italy) and asked ourselves, how could we take this further? On the devised creation project Atlantide, we were able to test the early concept of Active Access Design (AAD) and Cross Sensory Translation. The potential was revealed.

“…a full house for Teatro Trieste 34 …a fusion of epic and contemporary, myth and poetry, in a fascinating total and inclusive theatre…” – Liberta

“…smashing nationality and accessibility borders in a Total theatre merging so many artistic languages in a complete emotional voyage…” – IMA Magazine

ANTIGONE IN THE SPRING

By Nathalie Boisvert | Translated by Hugh Hazelton
Translated from Antiogone au printemps (Quebec, Canada)

“The Antigone of Nathalie Boisvert’s beautiful text is so close to us…It’s impossible not to feel the contemporary resonance.” – Sorstu.ca

In this contemporary reimagining of Antigone, in a Montreal of now and myth, birds fall from the sky in the thousands and rot under the sun of an early spring. Antigone and her two brothers, Étéocle and Polynice, are swept up in the popular revolution rumbling through the city. Each must chooses a side. During a riot, the two brothers clash and kill each other. Polynice’s body becomes evidence to incriminate the protesters. How can Antigone, despite all the obstacles, escape the fury of power? In times of unrest, how do you stay whole, and true?

Antigone au printemps was first produced in 2017 (Théâtre Fred-Barry) in Montreal by Le Dôme créations théâtrales, directed by Frédéric Sasseville-Painchaud. It received the Prix Émilie Augier from the Académie Française; and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for French Language Drama. In May 2019, it received a dramatic reading at the Teamtheatre Global Quebec event in Munich, Germany.

The professional performers/readers for ANTIGONE IN THE SPRING are: Lewis Bruniges; Rebecca Lee and Joseph Reed.

Last year, Presence Theatre presented from Quebec, MIDNIGHT by Marie-Hélène Larose-Truchon and (A DAY AT THE) MALL by Emmanuelle Jimenez.

FACELIFT

By Nathalie Boisvert | Translated by Johanna Nutter
Translated from FACELIFT (Quebec, Canada)

…a woman in her fifties leads an online makeup tutorial: first the foundation, then the eyes and finally the mouth… As she constructs the perfect face, she shares with us the secrets of successful make-up, her thoughts on the necessity of this camouflage, the dangers of age, loneliness and failure. As she drifts away from the female ideal, she enters into a dialogue with Nelly Arcan and Simone de Beauvoir. The activity of daily make-up turns into an examination of a woman’s life, questioning the relationship between women and beauty, seduction, aging and the subject of women’s freedom in the face of social diktats. A brand new work…

A live reading of a new work FACELIFT by Quebecois playwright Nathalie Boisvert, Monday Jan. 17th at 7pm via Zoom, followed by a discussion/Q&A with the writer and also the translator Johanna Nutter.

This is part of an ongoing occasional series of Presence ‘virtual’ readings exploring and celebrating new international theatre texts in translation, a main feature of which is the extraordinary work now emerging from the very vibrant Quebecois theatre community in association with BoucheWHACKED! About the translator

Johanna Nutter

JOHANNA NUTTER (she, euro-settler, multidisciplinary artist) developed her passion for translation through acting: being one of few perfectly bilingual theatre artists, she played leading roles at Centaur (Good People, You Will Remember Me) and La Licorne (Les Événements). The attention of both circles came thanks to the success of her solo my pregnant brother/mon frère est enceinte, which she translated during a residency in Tadoussac, accompanied by Linda Gaboriau. The show toured across Canada and Quebec in both languages, and to the UK and Belgium. Subsequently, she translated the works of Annick Lefebvre (Barbed Wire), Guillaume Corbeil (You’ll Go Looking for Her), and Florence Longpré & Nicolas Michon’s ballet-theatre hybrid CHLORINE, which she also produced and directed at Centaur, with her company creature/creature.
